Summer Erg-Series

The Summer Erg-Series 2020 consists of five ergometer races, which will take place on the first weekend of June and continue until October. Each race-distance is split into different sub-distances that have to be accomplished in a single attempt. You may compete wherever you feel most comfortable. Whether at home, in a club or in the gym, it does't matter, all you have to do is to submit your results ONLINE via the Facebook group. If you are not part of Facebook community, an ordinary e-mail ( will also do the job.

Regardless of whether you are male or female, young or old, light or heavyweight - the unique Alster Ergo-Cup® rating system asseses everyone on an equal basis in the overall rating. The trick is that your achievements will be pitted against your theoretical chances. In the end, everyone will be competing against each other, fair and square!

In order to do that, competitors will initially be alocated to one of the existing Concept2 categories based on age, gender and weight. For several years now Concept2 has recorded all world record times in each category and for all individual distances (500m, 1000m etc.). These official times will serve as your individual reference time.

Each individual race is based on different sub-distances, but has to be acccomplished in one single attempt. Within a single sub-distance Competitors have to get as close as possible to the respective reference time, i.e. the time of the Concept2 world record holder in your class on this distance. Each participant therefore is rowing against the best world time in his respective class. The percentual deviation from the world time is averaged in the end from alle sub-distances (all have the same weighting). Overall, the smaller the total deviation in percent, the better your achievement and thus your rating.

We will determined your percentual deviation within a week of the finished respective race. In order to rank comeptitors properly we will be using two tables: one is only for athletes rowing on Concept2 devices. The orther list is general list of all participants regardless of the ergometer machine.

Example evaluating the partial distance over 500 meters:

Competitor 1: female, lightweight, 45 years
C2 world record split 500m in this class = 1: 37.5 min
personal time 500m = 1: 58.2 min

Balanced result: competitor 1 is 21.23 % slower than the world record holder.

Competitor 2: male, heavyweight, 35 years
C2 world record split 500m in this class = 1: 10.5 min
personal time 500m = 1: 31.1 min

Balanced result: competitor 2 is 29.22% slower than the world record holder

Although competitor 2 recorded a much faster split, the deviation from his C2 reference time is still a great deal higher than that of competitor 1. This means that the younger male athlete has achieved a mediocre result, and eventhough the older female athlete was factually slower on the erg, she won because her deviation from the world record was much less.

Example evaluating the overall result:

Each deviation of the sub distances will be added up to equal parts in the end. For example, if you deviate 23% from the world record time in the first sub-distance, 36% in the second and 58% in the third because you cannot keep up the pace, you have an average deviation of 39% (23 + 36 + 58 devided by 3 = 39). So, competitors who can alocate their energy better and split the pace times more efficiantly creating fairly consitent deviations of 38%, 37% and 36% achieve a lower overall deviation of only 37%. This result is thus better.

Because this is a purely online competition, it is up to you where you start your race.

Start times

You can row any time on thespecific weekends from Friday morning (0:01 a.m.) to Sunday evening (11:59p.m.). But it is important, that there is no pause between sub-distances.

Competitors must transfertheir results (see below) until Monday evening (11:59 p.m.).

All times refer to UTC!

Weight categories

We divide competitors basically into two classes: light- and heavy-weight. The dividing line between light and heavy is 61.5 kilos for women and 75 kilos for men (including sports clothing).

In general, we won't check up on this and trust you submit all details honestly.

Age categories

Competitors will be divided into age groups based on the world ranking lists of Concept2. Decisive is the age at the time of the race:

The age categories will be:

12 and under

For the distance of 2,000m, the following age categories apply:

Ergometer manufacturer

Basically: Everyone is welcome to compete, regardless of the rowing machine used. Because the reference values are currently only available for Concept2 devices and devices from other manufacturers have different time measurements or rowing technologies, we will list different rankings sorted by manufacturer.

Ergometer setting

Each participant can individually select his or her air flap setting (Concept2) or resistance settings on the ergometer for each individual race.

Display settings

When using a Concept2with a PM3, PM4 or PM5 monitor, please use the "Interval variable"setting to set the specified route sections individually WITHOUT a break.

If your rower ergometerdoes not have this function to set the intervals distances, you cannot participatein this series.

A pause between sectionswould be unfair to the other competitors!

Sending your data

1. You set the individual distances on your display as successive intervals WITHOUT breaks and row through in one attempt.

2. After the race, you take a selfie of yourself AND the display, on which the results of all sections are clearly legible (with Concept2: Memory -> Date -> Call up overview of the total distance: the time is here recorded for each interval) .

3. You post the photo with a summary of your results on that specific section until Monday evening in the Facebook group SUMMER ERG-SERIES. If you are not part of Facebook community, an ordinary e-mail will also do the job.

Your information should be structured as follows:

Max Mustermann - Race from [DD.MM.JJJJ]
1st section: X.XXX Meter = [hh: mm: ss, 0]
2nd leg: etc.

(As you have registered with name, birthday and weight, we can now compare your times with the best times in your class and calculate the deviations for each sub-section.)

All information must be sent by Monday evening (11:59 p.m. local time). Results that are uploaded on Thursday prior to friday racing or on Tuesday too late will not be taken into account.

How do we verify the results

It is up to you and yourfairness. After the race you have to take a selfie of yourself and the displayon which we can clearly see the results of all sub-sections.

We trust that allcompetitors are honest and fair and the information is not manipulated in anyway.

And the Winner is ...

After the weekend, we will evaluate all results as quick as possible and publish themon Facebook and the website.
